An innovative new partnership between TAFE NSW and Peter Warren Automotive will see local apprentices studying a Certificate III at the Campbelltown TAFE campus.

The partnership is designed to help meet the growing need for automotive technicians.

The partnership announcement was made by NSW minister for skills and tertiary education Geoff Lee as the program started at Campbelltown TAFE recently.

Now, apprentices from Peter Warren Automotive sites in Campbelltown, Warwick Darm and the Northern Beaches are the first to take part in the program, which will see them study their Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology.

“This partnership will see first-year apprentices receive hands-on training specific to the vehicle makes associated with Peter Warren Automotive,” Mr Lee said.

“This agreement is an example of how TAFE NSW partners with industry to deliver practical and specific skills to meet industry needs.

“In this case, building a pipeline of mechanics to strengthen the automotive industry and meet the safety and customer service needs of Peter Warren Automotive.”

Wattle Grove resident Andrew Passmore is one of the first batch of students/apprentices to take part in the program.

The 18-year-old first started with work experience at Peter Warren, before doing school-based vocational training and then becoming an apprentice with the organisation.

“I wanted to see what the industry was like, and I really enjoyed it once I started,” he said.

“It’s all pretty interesting, learning about everything like wheel alignment and wheel bearing.”

Peter Warren Automotive senior executive Daniel Waterfield said the training partnership was an integral part of the company’s future growth.

“This training is part of our DRIVE Academy – a nation-wide training initiative that touches on how we deliver, reward, improve, value and empower our employees,” Mr Waterfield said.

“Peter Warren Automotive is proud to provide our apprentices with access to leading industry training that will meet the skills needs of the automotive jobs of the future.

“Having our apprentices trained by highly-skilled TAFE NSW teachers on the vehicles we sell and service ensures the needs of our customers are always at the forefront of our business.

“The strategic partnership between Peter Warren Automotive and TAFE NSW will see our first-year apprentices introduced to an exciting future through this customised training program.”
